It is only used in certain situations and on rare occasions. During such an assignment, the interpreter sits behind or next to the person requiring the interpreting service and delivers the translation simultaneously by whispering into the person's ear.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Since the chuchotage interpreter may only speak (or whisper) extremely softly, one interpreter can interpret for a maximum of two people.<\/li>\n<li>The chuchotage interpreter must be able to sit or stand in a place where they can receive good acoustic input.<\/li>\n<li>Unlike booth interpreting, there is no sound insulation. Therefore, it is unavoidable that others in the audience will hear mumbling in the background.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pgc-3037-1-1\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-3037-1-1-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"2\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3925 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.arps-aubert.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/fluesterdolmetschen-2.jpg\" alt=\"whispered interpreting\" title=\"whispered interpreting outside\" width=\"329\" height=\"216\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-3037-2\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-has-style\" ><div class=\"uk-column-medium-1-2 panel-row-style panel-row-style-for-3037-2\" ><div id=\"pgc-3037-2-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-3037-2-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child\" data-index=\"3\" ><div class=\"uk-column-medium-1-2 two-column panel-widget-style panel-widget-style-for-3037-2-0-0\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<h2>Whispering at a distance: technology helps<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"panel-3037-2-0-1\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-last-child\" data-index=\"4\" ><div class=\"uk-column-medium-1-2 two-column panel-widget-style panel-widget-style-for-3037-2-0-1\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p>Since the beginning of the Covid pandemic, chuchotage interpreters rarely sit next to the person they interpret for. The physical proximity between interpreter and listener(s) required for <strong>whispered interpreting<\/strong> is <strong>nowadays undesirable<\/strong>. This is why for more than three years our chuchotage interpreters have almost exclusively been using special <a title=\"portable interpretation equipment\" href=\"https:\/\/www.arps-aubert.de\/en\/interpreting-technology\/\">portable interpretation equipment<\/a>. Using this equipment, the chuchotage interpreter speaks into a microphone and the listeners hear the interpretation through headphones. An added benefit is that this technology allows more than two people to hear the interpretation and the interpreter does not need to sit in the immediate vicinity of the listeners.<\/p>\n<p>Given the inherent mental and physical demands involved, two alternating interpreters are deployed for whispered interpreting. Often this activity requires greater concentration than when interpreting from a booth as the input does not come cleanly through headphones. It competes with distracting ambient noises that cannot be filtered out, such as clattering coffee cups, fire engines, coughs, doors closing. It is therefore <strong>recommended that whispered interpreting only be used for short events<\/strong> or in situations where <strong>sound-insulated booths are not practical<\/strong>, such as guided company tours, events involving multiple locations, delegation visits, short presentations or in restricted spaces.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-3037-3\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-3037-3-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-3037-3-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"5\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<h3>Whispered interpreting in combination with consecutive interpreting<\/h3>\n<p>Whispered interpreting is also frequently used in connection with consecutive interpreting. A typical scenario would be a <strong>panel discussion that is held exclusively in German<\/strong> but where one participant understands\/speaks only English or French. In this case, the interpreter simultaneously interprets the German input provided by the other panelists into English or French. All you need is a microphone for the interpreter(s) and headphones for the listeners.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>However, clients should not underestimate the <strong>downsides of whispered interpreting<\/strong>. The first law of interpreting is: \"No input - no output\". If interpreters cannot hear the speaker, they cannot interpret. Therefore, the interpreters - especially if the speakers themselves do not speak into a microphone &ndash; must walk about the room to get the best possible sound. This can be disturbing and quickly become annoying for those participants who do not need interpretation.<\/p>\n<p>For chuchotage interpreters, whispered interpreting causes <strong>significant additional stress<\/strong>. In addition to the high level of concentration that is required, interpreters are exposed to difficulties that are hard to predict. For example, in talks around a large table the chuchotage interpreters must always keep an eye on the dynamics in the room so that they can react to changing speakers and quickly move to the ideal spot. Quiet or soft voices, strong dialects, coughing or sneezing during a meeting create additional challenges for simultaneous interpreting. This is another reason why whispered interpreting should only be used for short events.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-3037-5\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-3037-5-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-3037-5-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"10\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<h3>How many languages can chuchotage interpreters handle?<\/h3>\n<p>Whispered interpreting is not an option if you want to have more than two languages interpreted at your event. <strong>Multiple languages require specific technology<\/strong> for \u2018relay interpreting\u2019 between the languages which currently cannot be managed with a portable interpretation system.<\/p>\n<p>Are you planning an international conference or event?
